How to Find the Right Dentist in Howard Beach, NY (or anywhere else!)
There are a great many of us out there that take quality dentistry for granted. Those who do not have access to good dentists in many regions of the world usually are forced into a bad dental situation or end up taking their teeth for granted, altogether, and eventually end up losing them at an earlier age than they should.
Even if you have access to a bevy of dentists in your area, it can still be difficult to find one that is qualified and competent. Below is a list of ways to be able to “weed out” the good dentists from the bad:
1. Utilize the resources of the American Dental Association. Call them or go to their website to find out what dentists they suggest in your area. They have invaluable information about specialists, fees, locations, and contact information. You can find out there about their reputation through public records or if they have any pending litigations. Searching Google for the dentists name will also bring up an abundance of information about a particular dentist and sometimes reviews from others who frequent them.
2. Google your hometown. You can find a list of practices in your own hometown by scouring the internet. For example, use search words like “dentist” and the name of your town, like “Howard Beach, NY.” You may have to tweak the list from there by using more specific search criteria. Many dental practices have their own websites now, as well, which can provide information about services, fees, and contact details. If a practice does not have a website, however, this is absolutely no reflection on their business or talent in dentistry. Many highly reputable dentists are smaller practices and only warrant small ads with their location.
3. Use an old-school method. Open the yellow pages of the telephone book to find local listings and advertisements. You can also use this as a point of reference in an internet search. Don’t let big, beautiful ads fool you, however. As with a website, a grand ad is no reflection on a practices services or quality. You’re here for information and not to be taken in by the money a practice can spend on an ad campaign.
4. Word of mouth. Like you might do with someones nice haircut, when you see someone with nice teeth, ask them, “Who is your dentist?”. On the other hand, if a friend or family member is complaining about dental problems caused by a particular dentist, take note of this practitioner, for future reference, of someone you might want to avoid in the future.
5. Signs, signs, everywhere are signs! Begin to take note of the signs for dental practices in your town. Are there people coming in and out? Do they have a barren parking lot? Do they exterior walls look like they’re about to collapse from neglect? These are not definitive ways to tell if someone is a qualified practitioner or not, but can certainly give you an immediate heads-up as to what you may be getting yourself into. Don’t avoid a dentist because the outside (or in) is unkept, but be wary. If a lot of these little things give you an uncomfortable feeling and you still decide to give the business a chance, then your first visit turns out to be a sub-par experience, you should immediately begin seeking out a new dentist or doing a more thorough screening of the one you are seeing before going back.
Your evaluation of finding the perfect dentist for you might seem a bit rigorous at first, but hopefully you’ll only need to do it once or twice in your lifetime. Like a good mate, once you find the right dentist, stick with them!
